Everything you ever wanted to know about the Sweetbay Magnolia tree


The Sweetbay Magnolia tree is a beautiful addition to any garden or yard.  Its dark green leaves glisten in the light, creating an appearance of frost on them.  The tree also sprouts beautiful white flowers that grow to be about two to three inches.  They are creamy white in appearance, with a small green center.  The flowers have a wonderful lemon scent that creates a beautiful fragrance throughout your outside space.  They bloom in late spring and early summer, making a wonderful decorative plant for your patio.  There are so many flowers that you’ll think you have a tiny blizzard in your backyard.  The white flowers aren’t the only show of color from the Sweetbay Magnolia tree.  Bright red berries bloom in the late summer, bringing plenty of birds to your back yard.  The Sweetbay Magnolia tree also provides a great deal of shade, so you just may want to consider it if you’re looking for a shade tree.


In addition to their beauty, the Sweetbay Magnolia tree has many other features that make it a wonderful tree to have in your yard.  The tree can survive all kinds of conditions, even a flood.  The Sweetbay Magnolia tree is also very pest resistant, which means it won’t require a whole lot of spraying or extra care.  This type of tree is also evergreen, which means it will give your yard a bit of color during the dark depths of winter.


The flowers of the Sweetbay Magnolia tree are also very tough, which means they can withstand a lot of high winds.  The flowers and leaves are tough because this variety of flowering tree has been around since before there were bees in existence.  This type of tree relied on beetles to pollinate them instead of bees, and the beetles are much rougher with the plants they climb on. 


If you decide to plant a magnolia tree in your yard, then the best way to get started is to purchase a tree that’s already started.  Most local garden centers will carry this type of tree because it grows in pretty much any type of climate.  The only exception is climates that have very severe winters.  Most starter trees are about two feet tall.


The best kind of light for this type of tree is full or partial sun, which is pretty easy to do because you’ll want to have plenty of space for it to grow also.  The best type of soil for the magnolia tree is near coastal areas, although it will tolerate most other kinds of soil, even acidic soil or one with a lot of sand, clay, and loam.  Just make sure that you keep the ground moist during the early years of this tree so it will take root and thrive in its new location. 


Once it’s planted, you shouldn’t need to pay too much attention to the tree except for enjoy its beauty.  You may just need to prune it after a few years.
